Early Years

We have a particular interest in working with very young children and their parents and carers and we do this in two different ways.  Either through  one of our specific programmes of work or by designing projects and workshops to enhance any theme or story.

All of our planning takes into consideration the requirements of the Foundation Stage Framework and we ensure that our projects are full of fun learning, inclusive and develop the whole child - there is something for everyone!

The Giant's Glasses

Working at Wallace Road Nursery School our aim was to motivate groups of children to work collaboratively outdoors and increase opportunities for creative self- expression through developing mark–making skills.

Children arrived one day to find an enormous pair of willow glasses in their garden. Who did they belong to and how did they get there?

The children decided that they belonged to Billy the Giant who had dropped them (and his bag with swimming shorts, suncream and bucket and spade) on his way to the beach.

Over the course of this week long project the children interacted with Billy in numerous ways - he even rang them and sent them a giant postcard!

We’ve learnt a lot from the project, like how setting scenes to create an atmosphere for collaboration enables children to engage in things that they wouldn’t normally have chosen to do.…One member of staff has really taken the bull by the horns and is continuing where Catalyst left off. The project has given her the confidence to tackle that.

 Valuing Shared Reading

 Snowmen!

Our Creative Partnerships project at The  Willows School in Milton Keynes exploring approaches to encouraging shared reading experiences.  The project started with consulting the children creatively about their learning environments.  We also carried out consultation with the children’s parents and this informed us of where the project needed to be placed.  The children talked at length about the physical environment of the library, that it was unwelcoming, uninspiring and not a place that they liked to be.

We then provided opportunities for the foundation stage children and their parents to participate in a variety of activities in response to an imaginative environment that the parents helped us to create. A range of approaches to story making were used which were disseminated to teaching staff through formal CPD sessions.

Our Tiny sessions are hugely popular with Children's Centres, Nurseries and the Foundation Stage.

Tiny Tunes music sessions Tiny Tunes music sessions

Join Tempo Teddy and friends for our fun and participative music sessions.  Enjoy toe tapping, foot stamping, knee knocking, hand clapping, instrument playing, wriggling and jiggling, lycra pulling, toy bouncing, song singing!  A wide variety of resources are used alongside instruments and time and space is given for children to explore sounds, make choices, receive encouragement and develop self-esteem, as well as develop musical concepts.

With the option of a ‘live’ musician to develop a love of live music and to enhance learning.   Sessions can stand alone for specific age groups or be a lovely ending to any Stay & Play session.
